AUS32 is a stable product, but it is sensitive to heat, sunlight and contamination. These simple rules keep it in good condition.
Temperature
- Ideal storage: a cool place, out of direct sunlight. As a rule of thumb, shelf life is around a year when stored below about 25 °C, and shorter when it is kept warm. Always check the date and advice on the label.
- Freezing: AUS32 freezes at about −11 °C. Freezing does not ruin it. Let it thaw naturally and it can be used as normal. Do not heat it aggressively.
- Heat: avoid leaving canisters in a hot vehicle or in the sun. Heat speeds up the breakdown of urea.
Containers and materials
- Keep the product in its original, tightly closed container.
- Urea solution can attack some metals. Avoid copper, brass, zinc and ordinary steel in contact with it. Use plastic (such as polyethylene) or suitable stainless steel.
- Never reuse a container that held diesel, oil, coolant or chemicals.
Avoid contamination
Contamination is the main cause of SCR problems. Impurities that look harmless, such as dust, tap water or a trace of fuel, can block the injector or leave deposits in the catalyst.
- Use a clean funnel or a dedicated pump that is only ever used for DEF.
- Do not top up with tap water and do not mix with other products.
- Wipe the area around the filler cap before opening it.
If the fluid looks cloudy, has crystals that do not dissolve, or smells of something other than a faint ammonia note, do not use it in a vehicle.
Spills and safety
AUS32 is not classed as a hazardous substance in normal use, but it is slippery and can leave white crystals when it dries. Wipe it up and rinse with plenty of water. Avoid contact with eyes, and wash hands after handling.
Storing in bulk (IBC)
For 1000-litre IBC tanks, keep them on a flat surface, in the shade or indoors, with the cap and valves closed. Use a dedicated transfer pump and hose. BluVera IBC tanks are reusable, so returning them empty helps reduce plastic waste.
